HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

Soulful and expressive Ghazal singer Sakhawat Husain ‘Nishat’ was in the city to perform in an event. Here he gets a little chatty in an interview with HT CITY.

Nishat is the grandson of the first recipient of the Padma Bhushan award, Ustad Mushtaq Husain Khan of Rampur Seheswan gharana.

Asking if Ghazal songs are losing steam now-a-days? To which Nishat replies, “Taareekh apne aap Ko dauhrati hai (History repeats itself) and I am sure the era of Ghazal lovers will come back again.”

Ghazal is a form of singing which one listens in a relaxed and easy mood, but in today’s fast life nobody has the time to opt it as a career because it needs a lot of patience. This is the reason why there are fewer platforms for Ghazal singing, adds the singer.

Describing Lucknow as a culture city, Nishat says Lucknowites have an ear for Ghazal singing.Ghazal wahin suni jaati hai jahan nawabi basti hai(Ghazal is listened only where nawabi culture exists).
