I SEE THINGS FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE

To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination says Urmil Kumar Thapliyal a veteran stage director of the city.

Thapliyal has been attached to the stage since 1964 when he migrated to Lucknow after the completion of his studies in Dehradun. .This is what made Thapliyal’s connection with Lucknow

Reasoning behind the theater to be still alive Thapliyal says, “The best part in theater is its live experience, it has no pauses and so is life, we believe in existence and theatre is set on beliefs.”

Justifying himself as a creative person, he says, “My creativity is my personality because a creative person looks at things with their own different perspective. In my words this is difference of interpretation of roles. What may be creative in my eyes, not necessarily would be creative in others view as such, he adds.”

Some of his famous works have been Harish Chander Ki Ladai, Shaheedon Ne Lau Jagai Jo, Prahalad and a few others.

Being the chief news reader in AIR for years, Thapliyal was always inclined towards his interest in theatres.

The director is a fond reader of contemporary literature. Right now, he is working for regional as well as dialectical theatres. The director currently writes weekly columns in daily newspapers like Samay Jharokha in Rashtriya Sahara, Saptaah Ki Nautanki in Hindustan and Nakkarkhana in Hindustan’s Friday Delhi Edition.
